The Finnich Glen is a dramatic gorge located between Croftamie and the Stockie Muir. The Carnock Burn has cut through the soft red sandstone rock to create a narrow twisting gorge. In the middle of this gorge, the rock has been eroded to leave an isolated table known as the Devil's Pulpit. It is an exceptionally dramatic spot, usually dark, gloomy and dripping with water. The stream flows over the exposed sandstone giving it a weird blood red colour. Access to the depth of the gorge is possible by a Victorian set of steps cut into the rock, quite a dangerous descent in wet or icy conditions.
The spot has become famous recently having been used as a film set location for the Outlander TV series, in 'The Eagle' film and the Pokemon movie. Being very close to the road, it is now a popular visitor attraction leading to parking difficulties in the little available space. Well worth a visit but take great care if you choose to try the descent into the gorge.
