Common Scoter

(melanitta nigra)
In Scotland, the Common Scoter is present in winter mostly off the east coast in certain regular areas like the Moray Firth, the Aberdeenshire coast and around Fife. These winter flocks can number several thousand birds with a Scottish total of up to 30,000. However, in Scotland it is an uncommon breeding bird with around 90 pairs being mostly found in the Highlands and the Western Isles. The bulk of the world population breeds much further north in pools and small lakes in tundra areas.
The birds in these photographs were found on a small loch near the sea on Islay, an island where there have been previously confirmed successful breeding.
