In June 2015 I visited the island of Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides with my sister and her husband, Elizabeth and Jackie Russell. The purpose of our trip was to visit the grave of our great great grandfather George Scott who was drowned when his sailing ship the SS Clydesdale was driven ashore on the island/reef of Eilean nam Ban on the west coast of Colonsay in December 1848. His body and that of another crew member were washed ashore at Kiloran Bay and were buried in graves marked by a few simple rocks some way up the hill side. Many thanks to Kevin Byrne, a Colonsay resident, who identified the location of the so called 'Sassenach Graves' and took us there.
On one of the days I walked to the adjacent island of Oronsay. At low tide you can walk across The Strand which is the stretch of sand between the islands, depending on the tide rise and fall you can get a few hours on the island before you must return. Most of Oronsay is managed as a RSPB Reserve.
