Avocet

(recurvirostra avosetta)
The Avocet (or to give it its full name, the Pied Avocet) is an occasional visitor to Scotland. It winters in the Mediterranean and Africa. The nearest breeding colonies are in eastern England - Lincolnshire and East Anglia. It seems to be a regular occurrence that a few birds, possibly young birds, overshoot their spring northward migration and end up in Scotland for a week or so before returning back south again.
