Hi Ian I was looking to identify an Australian water bird that I shot this morning and Google found your site and it was in the top 5. I didn't realise it was yours until I enlarged a photo and saw your full name. It's been a pleasure to look through these images and I learned some bird names. Simply stunning and inspirational aquatic bird photography, I regularly photograph most of the birds featured here (the inland ones) and they are very, very hard to approach most of the time (there are usually lookouts which give you up no matter how hard you try to conceal your approach) so well done, your colour management is superb, and these images are ultra sharp (nice choice of lens in the Canon 500mmF4L and you obviously make very good use of it. I want one santa) you obviously shoot the majority of your work at well above F8 which is lovely to see for a change (really getting a little bit sick of images which are shot wide open to get bokeh, even though it can be beautiful, most photographers abuse the effect and quite often it is accidental anyhow) To shoot these birds at over F8 and maintain a relatively low ISO under 400 (to keep the digital noise down which you have obviously done) and still get sharp captures is difficult as the shutter speeds can be very slow unless very bright conditions are encountered, (circular polarizing filters must have also been used,(no glare off of the water) an almost essential piece of kit in Australian aquatic bird photography, so another couple of stops lost) so very well done Ian. It is also nice to see that you haven't followed the recent trend of very heavy vignetting. Although it might not be obvious to most photographers these shots have been very carefully crafted and must have been shoot in manual mode, you simply don't get results like this using program or auto modes, so Ian must really know his stuff. The composition of the majority of photos on this site are exceptional and really show off our great wild country and its feathered inhabitants. I look forward to seeing your future posts.
