Sunny Side Up

Aups, Provence, France.

Almost all the sunflowers I had seen were well past their prime so I was delighted to come across this glorious backlit field of them near the town of Aups. Everything about this shot was difficult the extreme low angle of the sun made lens flare very likely and the exposure would need to be spot on due to the very high contrast inherent in backlit scenery. It was while noting all these considerations it occurred to me that there was something unusual about this field of sunflowers. I suddenly realised that all the flower heads were turned away from the setting sun instead of facing it!!

Beautiful image. Almost ready to be painted by Van Gogh or Renoir.

I know why they were facing towards you; they saw the camera! ;-)

It seems that sunflowers face south, but I don't know how true it is. This is a great shot, I love the amount of detail. Worth all the hard work. V
