Skye Light

Quiraing, Skye, Scotland.

In order that I could make the best possible use of first light breaking over the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye it was necessary to get to my location prior to sunrise. In summer that means about 4am. The sky duly turned the most gorgeous mix of pink and magenta topped off with bright orange as the sun neared the event horizon. I realised that although I could clearly see the sheep grazing on the shapely sculpted plateau of grass in front of me, Velvia was going to struggle. I was forced to fit 5 stops of ND grad to control the contrast differential to an acceptable level.

I'll have to start getting up earlier when I'm on Skye in a few weeks time. :-) This is a sublime shot, and excellent technically with the foreground detail and background both perfectly exposed. A lesson to those (including myself) who have a tendency to think that ND grads have had their day now that we can "fix anything in photoshop". ;-)

Ian ... a classic, truly. This is why I went to Skye except that I only had two days there and truly lousy weather. Wonderful sunset .... voted

All the more reason to go digital - as great as your work is, imagine what you could do with a nice 16 bit raw file - or several of exposures of the same image ;-)
