Sand Bars

Traigh Mhor, Harris, Scotland

If I was asked to name my favourite beach in Scotland I would probably have no hesitation in naming it as Mellon Udrigle but I confine that choice to the mainland. If I were allowed to widen my options to include some of the islands dotted around the UK then I would have to plump for this small stretch of coarse grained sand on the west coast of Harris. Huge dunes tower behind the beach, huge turquoise North Atlantic breakers burst on its shoreline yet unlike Mellon no seaweed ever seems to be deposited there. It is just pure beauty. These sand bars materialised at low tide and were furrowed almost 4 inches deep. The colour intensity of the sand being heightened by the sun staining the clouds at twilight. Magical.
