The world’s oldest long-distance sled dog race will mark its 100th birthday with the centennial running of the All Alaska Sweepstakes this month. The 408-mile race will take some of today’s top mushers over a route that in 1908 was selected by the then-new Nome Kennel Club specifically to challenge mushers and their dogs with the most dangerous and varied terrain possible. The prize for first place in this 100th anniversary race: a silver cup and $100,000. It is the largest purse in the 100-year history of sled dog racing.
