Mt Edgcumbe House and Garden

Mount Edgcumbe House is the former home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. Set in Grade 1 Cornish Gardens within 865 acres Country Park on the Rame Peninsula, South East Cornwall. There are fine views of Plymouth Sound and Plymouth Hoe from the property. It is a short ride away from Plymouth accross the Tamar River on the "Foot Ferry". You could also take the car on the vehicular ferry but it is a longer trip.

Mount Edgcumbe House was first built in the 1500s. The house was damaged by bombing in WW2 but was restored after the War. The house does not overly impressive from the outside but has a beautiful layout inside. Ground rooms open onto a spacious central atrium filled with natural light. First floor rooms open onto an open corridor that overlooks the floor of the atrium. There is a grand stairway between the first floor corridor where the Earl and his wife could make the "Grand Entrance". The house contains some beautiful furniture and art works. As usual, photography is not permitted inside the house. The Earl's family also owned Cotehele on the Tamar river.

The property is jointly owned by Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council and is one of the regions most popular historic tourist destinations.
