Khouang Xi waterfalls are 30 km from Luang Prabang. The walk to the falls climbs up a quiet valley through a mix of primary and secondary forest, and passes some huge hardwood trees that have somehow survived the ravages of excessive logging. Meandering up along the small river you reach several levels of milky limestone pools, each with their own rocky waterfalls tumbling magically down from the next level, and surrounded by tropical vegetation and small sandy beaches. At the top, where the valley ends up against a steep cliff, the water crashes dramatically to your feet from a plateau forty meters above. A wildly romantic spot.
