Kerman is the largest city in Iran's south east and the capital of Kerman Province. Its wonderful
Vakil Bazaar
has been built and added to for over six hundred years and is still the main shopping centre for the old town area. At the bazaar's eastern extremity, Shohada Square is home to the attractive
Jameh Mosque
and the mausoleum of Sufi mystic
Moshtaq Ali Shah
with two pretty blue-tiled domes and a small garden that is a lovely spot to be as the sun goes down.
South of Kerman lies
Rayen
, an ancient mud brick citadel which has attracted increased attention since Bam was flattened by an earthquake in 2004. Rayen’s fifteen hundred year-old Sassanid citadel is much smaller than Bam, but is quite a sight – especially from the battlements looking down over the town enclosed within its fortified walls. Not far away is
Mahan
and its splendid
Aramgah-e Shah Ne’Matollah Vali Mausoleum dating from about 1425. Built by an Indian rajah for a well known Sufi dervish it is famed for its seven inlaid Indian doors and its tiny prayer room decorated with murals of Quranic verses and symbols. Also in Mahan is the paradisiacal
Bagh-e Shahzadeh
garden; stepping out of the semi-desert into this lush rose garden set amidst green trees and bisected by a long water channel with a series of cascades, you could be forgiven for indeed believing you were in heaven.
