Knowlton

Cranborne Chase -- and particularly the vicinity of Knowlton -- is one of the most significant archaeological sites in north-west Europe.
Between Sixpenny Handley and Wimborne, there are literally hundreds of round barrows or burial mounds; and within one kilometre of Knowlton Church alone
there are 180 barrows (seven of which are clearly visible); and the Dorset Cursus, located a few kilometres to the west (a 10-kilometre long earthwork)
forms the largest prehistoric monument in the whole of Europe.

More information on Knowlton can be found here and here.

(The first 15 images on this page were taken at dawn on Christmas Day, 2005:
as the fog cleared to reveal a wonderful sunrise!)
