Angel of the North

After visiting Durham Cathedral, at the beginning of August 2005, we were stuck for something to do for an hour or so...
-- so decided to see if Antony Gormley's 20m sculpture lived up to the hype.

Well, for me, it was quite an overwhelming experience: from seeing it emerge above the trees as we drove up the A1, to studying it close-to.
Quite awe-inspiring; but made human by the people relaxing, playing, picnicking underneath it.

----------

there is a pit-head far away
without its winding gear
and there they crucified the pits
and all the jobs round here

so dearly, dearly we need jobs
to earn our daily bread
the right to work is all we crave
to keep our families fed

there is a green hill not far away
that used to be a pit
but now it's just a grassy bank
where picnic parties sit

and deep beneath their quiche lorraine
the ghosts of miners sing
the politics of selfish gain
has ruined everything
