Angel of the North

After visiting Durham Cathedral, at the beginning of August 2005, we were stuck for something to do for an hour or so...
-- so decided to see if Antony Gormley's 20m sculpture lived up to the hype.

Well, for me, it was quite an overwhelming experience: from seeing it emerge above the trees as we drove up the A1, to studying it close-to.
Quite awe-inspiring; but made human by the people relaxing, playing, picnicking underneath it.

"They", who is presumably not "us" were thinking of commemorating the industrial heritage of the area. I presume you have never seen the sculpture, because there is an elegant beauty to it. The juxtaposition of hard metal, flowing lines and cultural iconography produce a thought provoking piece of public art. I would highly recommend you at least driving past it, even if you chose not to divert from the motorways.

I remember the pit workshops opposite this site. The angel is an impressive structure, and a huge improvement on what was there before, the locals call him Kevin. Most people who hate it haven't seen it close up.

Excellent photos. What a terrifying and hideous object. Like something out of a totalitarian Stalinist nightmare. Or, perhaps the sort of monumental monstrosities one saw in Nuremburg during the '30s. What were they thinking?!?!
