Floods: 2012-2014

Authorities and the public in the UK are starting to realise that flooding could now be a regular occurrence
rather than a once in a while major event. Last year, 2012, was one of the top five wettest years on record,
so it is no surprise that not only efforts are being made to make sure defences are properly set up,
but also that efforts are underway at improving the forecasting of such major events.

Winter is generally seen as a 'normal' time of year when the UK experiences
frequently saturated ground due to higher rainfall and reduced levels of evapotranspiration.
The last twelve months has defied such generalisation and has offered an unpredicted increase
in flood frequency from winter to summer in 2012, and we remain vulnerable to further flooding
given even moderate rainfall in the next few weeks.
