It's high summer on the Devonshire coast. A soft cloud drifts above in a blue sky. Below, on the pebble beach the sun throws shadows into the lines of the clinker-built fishing boats pulled far up on the hard pebbles. The pebbles throw back the light like frozen ripples in water that does not move or make a sound. Light and dark, two boats assert their differences, side by side waiting for the tide.
