Eastern Angkor

Includes:

1) THOMMANON - small, attractive temple in very good condition, built at the same time as Angkor Wat.

2) TA KEO - temple-mountain dedicated to Shiva. Known in its time as ˉthe mountain with golden peaks.ˇ The first temple to be constructed wholly of sandstone. Many Angkorian temples are partially unfinished, but Ta Keo seems to have stopped construction particularly early in the decoration phase of construction, as there are very few carvings.

3) TA PROHM - originally constructed as a Buddhist monastery and was enormously wealthy in its time. This quiet, sprawling monastic complex is only partially cleared of jungle overgrowth. Massive trees grow from the towers and corridors offering some of the best ˉtree-in-templeˇ photo opportunities at Angkor.

4) SRAH SRANG - means 'royal bath'. Water has been stored for the benefits of all creatures, except for the 'dyke breakers' - the elephants.

5 ) BANTEAY KDEI - sprawling, largely unrestored, monastic complex in much the same style as Ta Prohm. It was originally constructed over the site of an earlier temple, and functioned as a Buddhist monastery under Jayavarman VII.

6) PRASAT KRAVAN - Reconstructed, unique brick towers containing large wall sculptures of Vishnu and Lakshmi in the brick, the very fine interior brick bas-reliefs are the only known examples of their type in Khmer art. Originally constructed by a nobleman rather than a king.
