From John Avis :- My uncle was George Robert Brown O/N C/J 111207 (Chatham rating) until he was commissioned (1st December 1931) as Sub Lt on HMS Ramillies. I inherited a briefcase with all his documents, photos, medals etc. He joined the FAA and flew Swordfish from HMS Malaya, Illustrious and Ark Royal during WW2 (awarded the DSC for his part in tracking down the Scharnhorst and Gneisnau). Also CO of HMS Wara, RNAS in Ceylon (I think.) Also served in RNAS in East Africa. 2 IC at Daedelus in the early '50s. I think he told me that he was on the Tiff selection board late 50's. Left the RN (as Lt Cmdr) shortly after this and became Harbourmaster at Poole Harbour. Died in 1972 from throat cancer, (always smoked a pipe). My brother and myself were both inspired by him (our Mum's brother) and joined the RN as a result!!
