2023, 1ST MARCH, JIM DINES, 7., REFURBISHMENT OF THE MAST IN NELSON HALL.jpg

Jim Dines said - Dropped of a few new and refurbished bits of ironwork to Shotley today and to check up on the team making the spars for HMS Ganges Mast refurbishment for Barrellman’s Point development for Wavensmere Homes.
Spars are just nearing completion and the tops platform all in greenheart is looking good.

For 18 months back in '48/'49 I woke up every day in the 'short covered-way 'Drake', and and at least once a week climbed the mast up to the top of the Jacob's ladder. Only once did I dare shinny up the pole and touch the button! Originally we did not have pyjamas and used to climb in our hairy front and JL Sullivan underpants, however when the St. Vincent transfer of communication boys arrived with striped PJ's we got ours and changed to going over the upper yard in them! Great to see the mast taking shape once again. Aye
