I was 27 Recruitment, joining HMS Ganges on the 1st September 1971.
Soon after moving over to the main establishment to Hawke 38 mess, our class was told that the best class of the year would be rewarded with a week’s skiing in the Cairngorms at Glenshee – We said there and then that this was Ours, and indeed the following year it was.
After some initial training on the short dry ski slope next to the gym, we went by train from Ipswich to Arbroath and were picked up there and taken to HMS Condor where we were accommodated. From there we were taken up to Glenshee by coach ever day along with our instructors, Royal Marines from the base.
It was a fantastic week, although, it had to be said, I was pretty crap at skiing
Here’s a post card that I picked up from Glenshee.
