1961 - JNR. HELLIWELL MEETS THE QUEEN. HE WAS SELECTED TO BE BUTTON BOY BUT DAMAGED HIS ANKLE IN A REHEARSAL.jpg

Sadly young Helliwell died in a motorbike accident ( he was pillion ) at North End Portsmouth while still a Junior Seaman. He had recently joined his first ship, HMS Trafalgar the battle class Destroyer which at the time was captained by R.R.B. Mackenzie himself previously in command of Ganges. A messmate not forgotten.

Pete was the second wave of Juniors to join Trafalgar during the 2-year commission. We had just paid off in March 1963 and I was ship keeping at about 2200 the phone call from the city police informed me of the accident and Pete's death. The motor bike was being ridden by ordinary seaman John Restall who was badly injured and later discharged to civvy street.
