The Arbuthnot Trophy was firstly a inter fleet marathon – later becoming a cross country race - with the first Arbuthnot Trophy (Marathon) - a British Navy inter fleet cross country running race - named after Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, 4th Baronet (1864–1916) - a British Royal Navy officer during World War I, who met his death at the Battle of Jutland ... . There were 400 participants in this first race, held in the Dardanelles in 1919. The Trophy was won on this occasion by the crew of the Iron-Duke Class battleship. The 1927 event held at Shotley was the cross country version.
