WRNS UNDER THE MAST DURING WW I
Seated 2nd and 3rd from left two 'Chief Section Leaders' (equivalent to CPOs)
wearing jacket and skirts with white blouse and black tie. Both are clerical
staff as noted by crossed quill pens on their lapels. They are wearing the same
hat as the junior ranks but instead of a tally a crown and anchor badge as for
petty officers. However the wrens badge had a pale bright blue crown and circle
with a gold anchor within the circle.
The wren wearing light coloured stockings (or none) is incorrectly dressed,
black stockings were regulation.
Seated centre an officer with the three cornered hat. Badge as for male officers
except the laurel wreath is pale bright blue. As far as I can make out her rank
is Assistant Principle, (the single stripe being equivalent to Sub Lieutenant)
Initially this rank did not have the diamond above the stripe.
With thanks to Brian 'Shorty' Shorthouse for supplying the above details.
