Hi Mike, I love the 400mm and it being a prime I am, of course, finding my images from it a lot more crisp. There is the non-IS factor where I have to keep my shutter speed above 1/640s if shooting handheld to overcome camera shake. However, most of my shots with this lens were taken while mounted on a monopod. I haven't even TRIED this lens on a tripod. I can just imagine the results. I wish I had gotten the lens earlier in the season as it's all showy white and "yucky" brown out in nature these days, in these parts. I'm wishing for spring already! :)

As for the 100-400mm, it's a great lens and I still carry it as my "walkabout" lens when I'm not going out to shoot purely wildlife. It's also a great lens but I don't find it sharp enough, for me, when I shoot mainly small birds. I just wish I could afford either a Canon 500mm or 600mm IS lens. But who's got $10,000+ CAD to throw away these days? :)

Excellent shot. Had one of these on a suet cake yesterday. Couldn't get a shot off. Nice job.

Not bad for 400mm. Looks like early morning or late afternoon shot given the light angle. Red spot is the highlight.
