September 14, 2005: Stump Stabber

Windsor, ON Canada

This wierd looking wasp was trapped inside our screen porch yesterday.
After some research, we found that it is called a "Stump Stabber" AKA ichneumons.
It was cool to watch this thing but definitely creepy.

Definitely the stuff from which nightmares are made. This insect was amazing! You can't really tell but it's ovipositor (it's tail) was about twice as long as its body. The whole insect from head to the end of its ovipositor was about 3 inches long. FYI: the Stump Stabber uses it's ovipositor to drill into its non-human victim and then inserts an egg, which eats the victim from the inside out. It's a good thing they don't hurt (or hunt) humans. ;)
