Sharon and I first saw these fascinating symbols in 2003, when driving up highway 400 through the Canadian Shield on our way to Killarney, Ontario.
They are called "inukshuk" and are stone landmarks used as a milestone or directional marker by the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They are stone symbols erected as native guides and no two are alike. They can be seen on almost every part of the Canadian Shield if you look carefully.
This particular inukshuk was erected on a large rock formation we came across while hiking the Marsh Trail in Algonquin Park. They are a fond reminder of our Canadian Heritage and the fascinating native peoples who were here long before our European ancestors took most of it away from them.
