These tables are in NYU's Bobst Library Lane just off the southeast corner of the park. They are used mainly by NYU students for study and relaxation. The tables you saw are on the southwest corner of the park and they are concrete and still there.

40 years ago the tables were concrete with the board set in tiles. I think the benches were concrete too. It's nice to see they are still playing. I spent far too much time watching and playing there.
