This was shot in winter, probably on what my father always referred to as "het kanaal" (the canal): The Rhein-Herne-Kanal in the Ruhr area. Especially in winter it was quite harsh, because the ships's cabin had to be taken down due to the low bridges. One of those can bee seen in the background. My mother often recalled that you could not hang out your laundry for fear of finding it blackened by the the foul air.
