The lake was created in the lower Jhelum valley, in Azad Kashmir, during the earthquake
disaster of 2005. The earth from the mountains dropped down and blocked the water of a small river
which created a dangerous situation. It is said that the authorities had to use force to unblock
the mouth of the newly-created lake to release the water which was gathering and threatened the
local villages.
