The "Walking Safari" is a longstanding tradition in South Luangwa NP, and originated there. While usually quite mellow, our walk in the park was not a "walk in the park".

Note the ranger with the rifle. Silly me, I thought he was just for show. But, we were charged by a tuskless elephant(see next image). The ranger stood firm and fired a warning shot, aborting the charge. I am confident he would have had time to chamber another round and kill the elephant, if necessary, but it would have been FAR closer by then. Personally, I would have put my first shot between the eyes.
