Route 2, better known as the Mohawk Trail, winds its way from Boston to Albany, NY. From the '20's through the 50's it remained a heavily traveled but touristy road, full of scenic views and leathercraft and indian lure tourist stops (my ex-father-in-law's father and granddad had started the Mohawk Trail Association) and ran gift shops and motels. The Interstate Highway System put a stop to that, and by the '90's the trail was a shell of it's former self. However, the views and shops remain.
These first pictures were taken from an Audubon Society wilderness preserve high above the town of Shelburne Falls, MA, known for its "Bridge of Flowers" and as the hometown of Bill Cosby. That preserve is known as "High Ledges", a local name for the spot once owned by Dutch and Mary Barnard, who wrote a book on the area and opened the trails that today constitute the area. The remains of the Barnard cabin are shown in one picture.
I will be adding more pictures over the next few years, and hope to highlight a few of the more unusual gift shops in the process.
