Ambient w/Studio Flash

Holyoke MA 01040

Lacking a flash that I could handhold, the next step was to shoot using one of the studio flashes. It took two sessions to get a decent balance, primarily in this case because the equipment just didn't fit the room..the light was too far left and close, or to the right and showing in the windows. The snoot gave too little light (although I got one shot where I was highlighted like a god). Umbrellas didn't work because the light was TOO diffuse, and gave a "flat" affect much like the on-camera flash.

This was my best effort. It was shot by choosing incandescent WB but with the flash cooling the overall balance a bit and then PP doing even a bit more. The flash was placed in the only place it could be placed with decent results...15" to the left of and 3' behind the camera, and up high near the ceiling, with barn doors position to direct the light. Exposure was lowered by 2/3rds EV in PP, and the red color curve was lowered slightly to de-empahsize the redness of the incandescent lighting. The resultant color is about the best approximation of the true warmth of the room that I could obtain. This followed a full two hours of experimentation which resulted in zero usable shots.
