Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR Brick Wall Test

Used with the D1H. Bjorn Roslett does brick wall testing, and so do I on every lens I acquire. This was done hand-held, with VR turned on.

The top row represents "wide-open" at the represented focal lengths. The second row represents the bottom-end of what Bjorn considers the maximal sharpness range from his testing...essentially one stop down.

My testing confirms his results. The lens is acceptable sharp wide open, and a tad sharper still one stop down....along with the VR, this is amazingly competent telephoto performance for a consumer zoom. I still use my 80-200mm f/2.8 for isolation, but as a walkaround lens and a vacation lens, this thing is fantastic.

I rented one of these for a trip to New Orleans, and after reviewing my shots from that trip realized this was one of Nikon's all-time great bargain lenses. Swapped my wide-angle for this one and some cash, and couldn't be happier, as I'm a telephoto kind of guy.
