L'Apothicairerie

Belle-Īle-en-Mer, France

The 'Grotte de l'Apothicairerie' (cave of the apothecary's shop) is a large sea cave
on the west coast of Belle-Īle-en-Mer. Waves roll in from two sides.
The name was insprired by the many nests of cormorants in the cave, arranged
like the jars on a pharmacist's shelves.
Old rough stairways lead down into the cave. When this photo was shot in 1979 you could still
climb down those stairs and into the cave, across the slippery rocks.

Since 1990 a sign warns for 'mortal danger' should anyone attempt the descent,
which is now 'strictement interdite', strictly prohibited.
