Szigetvár: Heroic Hungarian Town

Szigetvár is a town located in Southern Transdanubia close to the border with Croatia. At the siege of Szigetvár in 1566 a small band of soldiers under Capt. Miklós Zrinyi held the fortress against an Ottoman army of more than 100,000 for 22 days. The Hungarians left the fortress when they ran short of water but rather than surrender, chose to die a heroic though futile death in close combat. Today it's a pleasant place with some surprising architecture.
