Kalmar Nyckel heading for port

The Kalmar Nyckel is a full-scale reproduction of the 1638 ship that brought Swedish settlers to Delaware and flies the Swedish, Finnish, Dutch and American flags along with the state flag of Delaware. According to Wiki, the original Kalmar Nyckel was a Swedish ship built by the Dutch famed for carrying Swedish settlers to North America in 1638 to establish the colony of New Sweden.

**************

We cross the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge, a drawbridge connecting Maryland and Virginia, quite frequently but have never been able to see it raised since bridge openings always take place at 1 a.m. But I received an alert from DC Police that on Sunday, June 7, it would be raised at 1 p.m. for the passage of the Kalmar Nyckel tall ship, a full-scale reproduction of the 1638 ship that brought Swedish settlers to Delaware. I thought for sure the police had made a mistake with the time, but we headed to Alexandria anyway in the hope of finally seeing the drawbridge in action. Luckily, we were not disappointed!

A beautiful tall ship. So much more interesting looking than the massive ships that cross the ocean nowadays. V

An excellent view of this reproduction. Something so fascinating about old ships - perhaps because of the stories they could tell.

Wow, beautiful to see, gorgeous ship, but not sure I'd want to cross oceans and storms in it!
