‘Tree of Life’ (1962)

This rug was created by Alice Ray, a Navajo weaver, farmer and mother in Arizona who used wool spun from sheep she raised and sheared herself.

One of the many displays in the Renwick Gallery exhibition, “State Fairs: Growing American Craft,” dedicated to artists’ contributions to the great U.S. tradition of state fairs, with more than 240 artworks on view, dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

I have watched a program about Navaho weavers in a PBS documentary. To watch it you have to have a PBS Passport, which is given when you become a donor: https://www.pbs.org/video/navajo-weavers-teller-sisters-jrt5ra/ The intelligence and practice required to produce such works of art is greatly deserving of appreciation and respect.

Interesting. I noticed in the top row and bottom row, how long those animals' bodies are, especially the horse. But altogether all of them look harmonious together. That's the true meaning of the tree of life. ~VVVV~
