Good luck parking here!

Much to our surprise, the District government sent a bobcat tractor to the alley behind our house and spent three hours plowing it late last night, trying to move the ice and snow that were preventing garbage trucks from getting in and cars from getting out. This “repurposed” parking place is where they dumped what they removed from a small part of it.

District regulations state that residents on an alley are responsible for clearing it, but due to the heavy ice, that was clearly impossible and would have prevented the city from collecting trash for weeks, so the city took action, amazingly enough.

Also, our heating guy came last night and found that the damper in our boiler was broken and did a temporary fix, so we at least had some heat last night. He’s here now installing a new part, so we’ll hopefully never again have to spend a day in a literally freezing house.

As if it couldn’t get any worse: No heat, posted earlier:

The sidewalks cleared out nicely. I’m glad your heat is working now. Hopefully your car will be out soon. V

residents can't be responsible for such extreme acts of nature. A fine catch with thiw image.

The ice is messy and inconvenient, but no heat is a real problem. Glad the warm air is flowing again, at least indoors.

Good grief, what a mess. This will take some time to melt and get back to normal for you.

So glad you are getting your heating fixed Helen…our house is all electric apart from the log burning fire which is a god send should we have a power cut….will be down to -15 in the night the forecast says…so plenty of ice around here too and like where you are it’s not melting yet…BV

It's a nice photo with a clear leading line showing how well your neighbors swept and cleaned the sidewalk in front of their houses. Where I live, there's not a snow mountain like this high, taking up one or two parkig spaces. But instead, there are about 6 or 7 cars in a row stuck behind an ice wall about 2 to 3 feet high. Anyway, good luck with your boiler repair. Stay warm !

Life is looking up (or at least warming up), and your local government is doing its job.

Happy to hear your heating system got some attention. When we lived on Long Island the DOT would come through and plow the road SEVERAL times a day and Bill would have to go out and shovel the driveway so he could get out. What a huge amount of work that was.

Oh boy...does this remind me of when I lived in Manhattan! Snow is gorgeous when it first falls, and then, this.
