‘Blue-Ribbon Afghan’ (2001)

This colorful afghan, crocheted by Ruth Ellen Klug, who lived in Rochester, MN, won a rare perfect score from the needlepoint judge at the Minnesota State Fair. It was made for her grandson Weston, who, at 6 feet, 4 inches tall, found her existing blankets to be too small.

One of the many displays in the Renwick Gallery’s new exhibition, “State Fairs: Growing American Craft,” dedicated to artists’ contributions to the great U.S. tradition of state fairs with more than 240 artworks on view, dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Wonderful colors. My sister in law makes quilts very similar to this. I have always told her they belong in a museum. V
