‘Century of Progress’ (1925-33)

One of the many displays in the Renwick Gallery’s new exhibition, “State Fairs: Growing American Craft,” dedicated to artists’ contributions to the great U.S. tradition of state fairs with more than 240 artworks on view, dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Woven by Katie Goar Maze, who resided in Lincoln, NE, until her passing in 1947, this quilt depicts technological advancements from 1833 to 1933. It expresses the nostalgic and nationalistic attitudes about pioneers and progress common in the 1930s.
