One of the many displays in the Renwick Gallery’s new exhibition, “State Fairs: Growing American Craft,” dedicated to artists’ contributions to the great U.S. tradition of state fairs with more than 240 artworks on view, dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
This quilt, created by Debra Wykert of Muscatine, IA, is a visual record of the daily high and low temperatures in her hometown. Each patterned block represents a day. A legend matches each fabric color to a five-degree temperature range. The transition between cool and warm colors reflects the area’s weather patterns and seasonal fluctuations.
