Two of the many displays in the Renwick Gallery’s new exhibition, “State Fairs: Growing American Craft,” dedicated to artists’ contributions to the great U.S. tradition of state fairs with more than 240 artworks on view, dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
“Corndog Vase,” created by Kelly Bohnenkamp of Indianapolis, IN, recalls an elegant Dutch vase designed to showcase tulips but holds corn dogs, a kitsch culinary staple of American state fairs. “Hot Dog,” representing a favorite food at state fairs, is the work of Betty Spindler, who lives in Tucson, AZ, but grew up in Missouri, where she attended county fairs as a child.
