Woodward & Lothrop was a department store chain headquartered in Washington, D.C., that began as the capital's first department store in 1887. We used to shop there all the time, but unfortunately Woodies filed for bankruptcy in January 1994 and closed in 1995. The flagship building is a D.C. historic landmark, and this picture, shot while waiting at a stoplight, is part of the decoration on what used to be a beautiful old building. At least one retailer moved in there a while back, but don’t think there’s anything in there now.
