The 'curious' kiwi

Not sure where we saw this, but according to the New Zealand Department of Conservation: The kiwi is a unique and curious bird: it cannot fly, has loose, hair-like feathers, strong legs and no tail. It’s the national icon of New Zealand and the unofficial national emblem.

Was this in the wild??? In all my different trips to New Zealand, I've never seen but a quick glimpse of a kiwi in the wild. I've seen their nesting boxes (put out by the Department of Conservation) but never a kiwi in daytime. I even went out at night on both Kipiti Island and on Tiritiri Matangi Island. All I got was a quick glimpse in the dark on Kipiti. I would have loved to have to gotten a photo like this.

interesting you saw one, as they are secretive and I think also nocturnal..
