Yet another tree bites the dust

This is an all-too-frequent occurrence on Capitol Hill, whose streets are lined with a large number of very old trees. I don’t know how this particular incident happened, but a few weeks ago when walking home I encountered a homeowner with an enormous branch in his yard. He said it had suddenly ripped off the tree in the treebox (on the sidewalk) in the absence of any wind or stormy weather.

Yikes.
It happens. I've heard a big branch come down on a calm day in one of our forests.

That's sad to see.

A sad sight...and a costly one for the home owner too.

It looks like a bright and cheery neighborhood despite the tree. The tree sounds dangerous especially if it lands on someone. V

That is sad to see. Sometimes trees are weakened by previous storms and high winds but manage to hang on awhile before suddenly splitting/falling. It can appear as if the tree branch has just broken for no reason. Of course, the latter may be what happened here. If removed, I hope they plant another of good size. V

A bad situation! Hopefully the damages on the house aren’t too bad! V

Thank goodness the house doesn't look badly damaged. Good documentary shot. V

Looks like the center is a bit rotted.

Nice shot of the scene. Could have been much worse if it fell on the car or house.

This is an unfortunate occurrence, usually there is tell tale signs that this might happen.

at least the house as no damage, great picture!

Nice shot of this broken/fallen old tree. Perhaps it is time to replace all old and potentially dangerous trees with new ones.

Hopefully the city will plant a young one in its place.

That's too bad.

trees have natural cycles, and those growing in the city face additional stresses...pity when the scene changes, yet inevitable..

It was quite tall and elegant, pity it broke. Very nice capture. V.
