‘Get away from the fence!’

A new shot of a by-now familiar scene, but today, when I wanted to take a picture of the Capitol through the gate, a Capitol Police officer told us to get away from the fence, which had never happened before. It’s bad enough that the people can’t get anywhere near “The People’s House,” but to be told that I couldn’t even stand near the fence made me pretty angry. Finally Tim said we just wanted to take a picture, so she relented and told us to take the picture and get out of there. I was appalled.

Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, has become a city of fences. They're ugly and everywhere, depriving residents and tourists alike of access to major streets, sidewalks, green areas, federal buildings, landmarks and of course the US Capitol, which ironically is supposed to be The People's House, except that the people are no longer allowed anywhere near it. There are plans afoot to make the barriers permanent, although there has been push-back from the District government, residents, especially those on Capitol Hill, where we live, and some lawmakers.

The idea for this gallery was suggested by Raymond in Canada http://pbase.com/monminou/profile and I thought it was a good one. Some pictures were taken when we had 25,000 National Guard troops guarding the Capitol area, while others are more recent. I hope the opportunities for fence pictures become fewer in time, but I wouldn’t bet on that.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

Not surprised of you experience it might happen again and some one may see you enough times and turn you in
a suspicious character taking photos of the capital and fencing.
Have some bail money just in case you get arrested.
You know what they say on the TV see something say something.
Nice work Helen .

Two individuals each in their own world of being inside or outside of the fence. How the world has changed as well as how we have been changed. A stellar photo that captures in this one image everything we have witnessed. A perfect image for contemplation and reflection. You have done your job as the photographer. Now it is time for the viewer to complete the process. VVV

It’s something I never thought I’d see. It doesn’t even look like America. I hope it isn’t the new normal. V

Nice picture with a not so nice fences and guards. Let's hope that the fences may be removed come calmer times, it is still not long ago that the violent people were there. Give it a year or two and keep your fingers crossed!

Defenitely a sign of the times. The Capitol stands out well between the snow-covered branches. !!V

They should have a new slogan "Amateur Photographers Matter" besides BLM ...haha! Those fences make great documentary images, though....V

It is a sad sight that the seat of democracy has to be protected from forces that doesn't believe its existence. V

Sad, and unfortunately not likely to change anytime soon. Thanks for sharing.

There used to be a movement that's motto was "I am a Photographer, not a Terrorists". It was mainly active in Europe. Maybe it is time for North America to get involved. V

Very sad to see this. Not what you'd expect to see in the capital of the FreeWorld and that sort of police attitude will only antagonise people. V
