Mural by artist Martin Swift created in memory of Richard Bangura, a DC high school student who was working with Pathways 2 Power to stem the gun violence in the city that had killed some of his own friends. Richard himself was shot on August 9, 2020 and died on Sunday, August 16, the day he was supposed to leave for Temple University, where he hoped his studies would lead to a law degree.
The 18-year-old was remembered as a standout at Paul L. Dunbar Senior High School, where he was an honor roll student who mentored classmates and served as a public advocate speaking out about enrollment issues and violence. Dunbar's principal, in a letter to Richard's parents before he died, said, “He was a big kid with an easy smile who was filled with promise.”
I wasn’t even sure I would post this picture because of all the obstructions, but once I researched it and learned its story, I simply had to.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.
