Home of the third Librarian of Congress

The Federal-style home at 224 2nd St. SE was constructed between 1802 and 1819. While the earliest history of the house is uncertain, it is thought to have been constructed by George Watterston, who resided there from 1819 until his death in 1854. Watterston was the third Librarian of Congress. Washington’s leading man of letters, Watterston was the Librarian of Congress who received Jefferson’s library in 1815 and adopted Jefferson’s basic classification scheme as the library’s own.

The Watterston House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It is currently the headquarters of the National Indian Gaming Association. It’s located about a half block from the Library of Congress, so Watterston had an incredibly short commute to work.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

well that was built to last...the design is surprisingly modest for that era..

These houses look like they are such good shape considering their age. Nice to see them kept that way, especially because of their historical significance.
