'We turned a riot into a panel discussion'

The long-awaited and mainly peaceful protest took place Friday night, with both opponents and defenders of the Emancipation Memorial as well as residents of Capitol Hill in attendance. There’s a movement afoot to either move the statue to a museum or to alter it. Nothing has yet been decided, and Lincoln and the freed slave are still standing, albeit surrounded by a high fence and concrete barriers.

One of my neighbors said it's typical of Capitol Hill culture that "we turned a riot into a panel discussion."

There’s an excellent report on the demonstration in The Wall Street Journal, written by another of my neighbors, but you need a subscription to be able to view it. If anybody wants a .pdf of it, let me know, and I’ll be happy to send it.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

A "panel discussion" is so much more civilised :)

Well, that's a pretty good outcome to what could have been awful. Hopefully the right decision will be made (I'm for the museum option).

A riot into a panel discussion...what a wonderful thing that is! V

Dialogue is good. A much more positive picture of America than the cable news presentations of the "culture wars" - which seem to be more about shouting than listening.

The whole scene, nicely photographed. I wonder what museum will take the Washington monument? What will the new name of the Capital be?

a relaxed scene well documented...perhaps statue tumbling is also becoming a spectator activity, to add to the number of protesters...

A fair turnout. Yes, I would like to see that article. Glad they were able to have a discussion. V

Here in Belgium they want to remove every statue of our former King Leopold II because he owned Congo and took advantage of that. In that case not a single politician could have a statue anymore.

great document to show what is happening.V.

Moving statues to museums is a cop-out in a city like DC which is meant to be monumental in character. The discussion about this statue in the DC black community seems to break along age lines. But "it is not what you say, it is what they hear." ~V~

Of course I can't vote, not an American, but it seems to me that a museum would indeed be the right place, no point in destroying the past, just remember it. Imagine if the ancient Rome, Egypt or Greece would have destroyed their beautiful antiquities, because someone didn't agree with the presentation ... humanity would have lost David, the Pieta, Zeus etc. The Jesuits have destroyed thousands of Maya and Aztec Codex because it didn't fit their religion ... look at us today, only less than 50 remain in the secret vaults of the Vatican. Humanity loses.

I read about this in the Washington Post. Would appreciate the WSJ article also, if possible. It is great to see this kind of public discussion. Some of the historical contexts come out.

Peaceful protest is fine with me. It's also nice to see folks with masks.

It’s heartening to see there was no violence. V
