The last picture in this series. There were never any lights on palm trees that I can recall, so looks like a nice way to brighten up the Diplomatic Quarter.
Some people have asked if I miss being in Saudi Arabia, and the truth is, I do, despite the fact that I almost refused to accompany Tim there. Of all our posts during 35 years in the Foreign Service, I think I enjoyed this one the most because it was so fascinating and radically different from anywhere else we’ve ever been, even though it was a difficult and sometimes dangerous place to live. I know that some things are changing for the better in the country, but I’m glad we were there when we were, at the end of the “old” era, so to speak. I also enjoyed showing my Pbase friends what Saudi Arabia really looked like http://pbase.com/helenpb/riyadh since very few foreigners were allowed into the country (which may be changing now) and there were basically no pictures available documenting life there.
I wish we could go back for another posting to Riyadh, but that’s unlikely to happen, so I’m happy Tim had to return there on business and was able get these pictures for me.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.
The standout, posted earlier:
