A final farewell to Saudi Arabia

The last picture in this series. There were never any lights on palm trees that I can recall, so looks like a nice way to brighten up the Diplomatic Quarter.

Some people have asked if I miss being in Saudi Arabia, and the truth is, I do, despite the fact that I almost refused to accompany Tim there. Of all our posts during 35 years in the Foreign Service, I think I enjoyed this one the most because it was so fascinating and radically different from anywhere else we’ve ever been, even though it was a difficult and sometimes dangerous place to live. I know that some things are changing for the better in the country, but I’m glad we were there when we were, at the end of the “old” era, so to speak. I also enjoyed showing my Pbase friends what Saudi Arabia really looked like http://pbase.com/helenpb/riyadh since very few foreigners were allowed into the country (which may be changing now) and there were basically no pictures available documenting life there.

I wish we could go back for another posting to Riyadh, but that’s unlikely to happen, so I’m happy Tim had to return there on business and was able get these pictures for me.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

The standout, posted earlier:

Apple iPhone X
1/4s f/1.8 at 4.0mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Love those decorated trees! So festive. And thanks for sharing your take on your time in Saudi Arabia, and especially for the photos you shared from that time.

The lit trees are an interesting change. It looks like here in Houston. I'm glad Tim had a chance to go back and he did a fine job on the photos. V

It always seems so fascinating to me, along with Iran because of the history there. I wish it was safe to travel to the Middle East. Nice ending to the series Tim. V

I'm glad that if you HAD to go to Saudi Arabia it was a meaningful and fascinating time for you and US! When Bill was working for Grumman Aerospace we had a chance to go to Iran and I put my foot down.

At least it was warmer than DC! But it was probably hot as hell in the summer months! They also have great music

It gives the road a festive appearance. I enjoyed reading hour narrative.
